Expo City and the Dubai Exhibition Centre from DWC

Expo City Dubai is what became of the Expo 2020 site: a working district of pavilions, parks and event halls between DWC and the city, with its own metro station on the Red Line’s Route 2020 branch. For DWC passengers it is the nearest big attraction and, during trade shows at the Dubai Exhibition Centre, the reason many of them landed. Below: what the district holds, how to reach it from the airport, and where to sleep for an event.

What the district holds

The site keeps Expo 2020’s landmarks working. The Al Wasl Plaza dome anchors the centre, with light shows after dark; the Terra sustainability pavilion and Alif mobility pavilion carry on as attractions; the Surreal water feature falls uphill on the plaza’s edge. Around them run gardens, playgrounds, cafes and a rotating events calendar, and the district hosted COP28 in 2023, which built out its conference muscle. The Dubai Exhibition Centre puts trade shows, congresses and concerts on the calendar year-round.

Getting there from DWC

By car or taxi the run is about 15 to 20 minutes. On public transport, the F55 bus links the DWC terminal with the Expo City metro station about every 30 minutes, making the district the one major destination reachable from this airport on a single bus; carry a Nol card, as the buses take no cash. The same station connects Expo City onward to the rest of Dubai, covered in the getting-to-the-city guide.

Sleeping for an event

Rove Expo City is the only hotel inside the district, at Al Wasl Plaza itself, with the halls and the metro in walking range and a rooftop pool facing the dome; during major shows its rates climb with demand. The airport set makes a strong plan B: Aloft Dubai South, the Holiday Inn and the Staybridge Suites all stand 15-20 minutes away by car, usually at calmer prices, and suit exhibitors flying in and out of DWC with kit to carry.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get from DWC to Expo City?

By car or taxi it is about 15 to 20 minutes. The F55 public bus runs from the terminal to the Expo City metro station about every 30 minutes, which lands you at the edge of the district; a Nol card is required on the bus.

What is there to see at Expo City?

The district keeps the best of Expo 2020: the Al Wasl Plaza dome, the Terra sustainability pavilion, the Alif mobility pavilion and the Surreal water feature, alongside parks, cafes and event spaces. The Dubai Exhibition Centre hosts trade shows and conferences year-round.

Where should I stay for an event at the Dubai Exhibition Centre?

Rove Expo City is the only hotel inside the district, a walk from the halls and the metro. The DWC airport hotels are 15-20 minutes away by car and usually cheaper during big shows, when on-site rates spike.
